More than just an art project, The Motherhood Project is an initiative that fosters self-discovery, deep solidarity, and social dialogue through creation.

Motherhood transforms the way we live, our self-perceptions, and the very nature of our perspectives on the world.
Reflecting on these alchemical shifts in who we are lies at the heart of The Motherhood Project. In modern society, where the role of women is in continuous flux, many mothers face isolation, stress, and confusion.
Under these circumstances, how many mothers are able to examine themselves, explore their new concept of motherhood, and achieve the growth they need?
Begun in 2023 by Tokyo-based creativity coach Paige Baldwin Ando and art educator Mioko Mochizuki, The Motherhood Project is a communal art project that explores the meaning of life as a mother.
Our workshops feature a unique method that combines intuitive image-making, writing, and self-reflective dialogue.
In 2025, we’ll collaboratively deepen our exploration through visual and verbal workshops that bring together women from all over the world. Together, we’re questioning and examining the experiences of mothers in modern society, and revealing our discoveries through the art that results.

In-Person Intuitive Image-Making Sessions

We start off with greetings and getting to know each other, forging new connections and laying the groundwork for our process.

We then move into the intuitive image-making session,
guided by questions custom-tailored to the session’s participants. (1 hour)

After creating, we share our experiences and reflections regarding the images and what we learned from them, and follow that with a shared meal. (1 hour)

With each question, each image, and each conversation, The Motherhood Project helps mothers unearth valuable insights while creating images that stun and arrest the viewer.
One of the responses was this image, accompanied by the following words:
Q: What do you know about yourself now that you didn't know before becoming a mother?
A:
"Whatever comes, I meet it. Whatever comes, I survive.
Whatever comes, even when it's relentless and brutal and crushes my very humanity against the jagged edges of impossibility, I persevere."
